Should you work with a real estate agent who’s your friend or a family member?

This is a common question, and being hesitant to buy or sell a house with a friend is totally normal! You should always do your research before hiring a Realtor, and be sure to ask them questions and relay what is important to you. You should feel like your Realtor is a good fit with you, and chances are if they’re your friend or family, they are!

Here are four reasons you should work with your friend, the Realtor.

  1. Trust. It is extremely important when buying or selling a home that you trust the person you’re working with. This is one of the biggest financial decisions you make during your lifetime, so having someone by your side that you trust to help make decisions is paramount. Having your friend with you helping make these decisions can help make hard choices easy!

  2. Confidence. You want to be confident in the person helping you with the transaction. Having confidence that someone is fighting for your best interests from start to finish can help make a stressful time much easier.

  3. Confidentiality. Many people think that when buying or selling a home, the agent they’re working with can see all financials associated with them. This is simply not true. Your lender will need your financial information, but that isn’t passed along to anyone else. All your Realtor knows is you’re pre-approved so they can take you out to see houses in your price range. Agents are also required to keep most other things confidential, including the reason for selling or buying a home.

  4. Fun! Buying or selling can be one of the most exciting times in a person’s life, so why not spend that time working with someone you enjoy hanging out with? Sharing this time with people you care about can be so rewarding.

Whether or not you decide to work with a friend or relative as your agent, make sure you take some time before you start your search to look at what you’re looking for in an agent. Finding someone that takes their time to walk through the steps with you and helps you understand the process is important. At Grey Duck Properties, focusing on our clients and making them feel like they are our only client is one of our core values. Buying or selling a home can be a stressful situation, especially if you feel like you have no one on your side. We strive to make every client feel like they’re part of the Grey Duck Properties family, from the signing of the initial paperwork to closing and beyond.
