Home improvements can seem overwhelming! Breaking them down into monthly tasks can make it much more manageable! Make your 2019 resolution getting your home into tip-top shape!

January - Organize your pantry. There’s probably food you don’t even know is in there! Throw away old and expired items and organize by category - lunches, dinners, snacks, healthy, etc. If possible, add drawers, plastic containers or shelves for extra storage.

February - Update a bathroom. Remove and replace old caulk on your tub, and add a new glaze. It’s like a new tub! Removing or replacing shower doors creates the illusion of space. You can also repaint cabinets and replace hardware for a totally new look. Towels, candles, and plants are great accents for a burst of color.

March - Install a laminate floor. That old, scuffed floor isn’t doing your home any favors. Easily install durable, budget-friendly laminate planks. You can walk on them same day, and they’re scratch and stain resistant. They can be damaged if water seeps below the surface, so check specific product information.

April - Wash windows and screens.  You’ll be surprised how much more light comes through your windows after giving them a good wash. Pick a cool, overcast day for best results. Wipe the panes clean with lint-free cloths, crumpled newspaper, or clean coffee filters. Remember to wash screens and storm windows and to clean the edges and windowsills!

May - Prep outdoors. Spring is here! Time to get outside and get your yard in order. Clean and repair your deck if needed, and update the cushions on your patio furniture. Stop at your local garden center to get some spring colors in your flower pots, and add some string lighting for a charming look.

June - Refresh a room with paint. Now that you can finally open your windows, it’s the perfect time to get some painting done. If you’re planning on selling soon, use neutral colors. If not, experiment! Make sure your walls are clean before starting, and repair any cracks or holes.

July - Paint trim. You’ve probably been putting this one off for a while, but it can make all the difference to the look of your house. Replace any rotting or broken wood and fill cracks with paintable caulk. Give the exterior a good cleaning, scrape off old paint, and make sure to apply two coats of quality paint. It should last 10 years if you do it right!

August - Organize your garage. Decide what you are making room for. Another car? Toys? A workshop? Organize accordingly. Decide what you should keep and what you don’t use anymore, and give away what you can. Store items in zones; i.e. gardening, toys, tools.

September - Winterize your house. Have your furnace inspected and replace filters. Plug leaks around windows and add insulation where needed. Clean out gutters and make sure your chimney and venting system are working properly. Remove hoses and drain spigots to prevent burst pipes.

October - Install a tile backsplash. Give your kitchen a stylish focal point with a tile backsplash. Make sure you measure before you shop, and choose the right tiles for the space. The simpler the design, the easier to install. Buy more tiles than you think you’ll need to account for mistakes.

November - Add character. Small changes can make a big impact. Adding trim and moldings to windows or painting what’s already there is quick and inexpensive. Keep the color throughout the house to create a unified look. New drapes or accent pillows in bedrooms and the living room are easy ways to change a look.

December - Clean out closets. Winter is the perfect time to clean out closets and other storage spaces. You can donate items to get year-end tax deductions. Work on one closet at a time or the task can get overwhelming. Divide items into categories: keep, donate, recycle, and toss.
