You may have seen the word hygge thrown around a lot lately, but what exactly is it? Hygge (pronounced “hoo-ga”) is the Danish concept for being extremely cozy; embracing it, loving it, living it.  Here are five ways to invite hygge into your home.

Let the light in.

Open the blinds, light some candles, gather around the fireplace.  Light can transform the atmosphere and bring warmth into your home. Lavender candles are soothing and bring a sense of tranquility into your space, or you can use any particular scent that reminds you of a memory or time when you felt safe and comfortable.

Cozy up your space.

Fill your space with pillows and large blankets. Use decor that has texture, the softer and fluffier the better. It’s a necessity in any hygge household to evoke warmth and being snug, and will make you want to cuddle up into your couch and never want to leave.

Unplug from technology.

Putting down your phone and turning off your computer -even for just an hour- is crucial. It helps you be more present in your physical space versus the digital, and brings your mind to a more restful state.

Make time for yourself.

A good cup of hot tea or coffee, a new book (or one you’ve read ten times), and snuggling into a blanket is exactly what hygge is about. It can instantly put you at ease and let you sink into your world of comfort.

Bring others into your hygge household.

Hygge is about celebrating things that make you feel warm and comfortable, and that includes friends and family. Warm drinks, cozy fireplaces, laughter, and love will make any home more comfy.
